The mission of the Scouts BSA organization is to prepare young people, both boys and girls, to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. The National BSA Council supports local councils that provide quality youth programs for character development and values-based leadership training to develop American citizens who are physically, mentally, and emotionally fit. The programs foster self-reliance, courage, resourcefulness, promotes pride in our American heritage and respect for basic rights of all people, and helps develop personal values based on religious concepts, as well as the desire and skills to help others. At a place of worship, BSA organizations are a form of youth ministry and ecumenical outreach, being composed of both parishioner and non-parishioner members. Activities include camping, outings to civic, educational, and natural locations to provide fellowship, education, and skills opportunities. Costs for many of these activities are covered through scouts’ personal participation in scout fundraising efforts, including the acclaimed STM Fish Fry and annual scout popcorn sale. Additional service hours are completed by Troop and Crew Scouts for the benefit of the community.
